More and more music video with robots. The first step to integrate robotic in daily life is to choose a media accepted by everyone. If you considere this from the robot's point of view, it could be a message like " Let me in !". Robots is becoming something music artists have to includ in their video. I wanted to confront those two images because there an interesting question about the robot and the design. The reference was from the begining the human shape and recnt research are turning to the zoomorph style. As always the fonction make the design. For this reason human shape will probably be abandoned. The reason is humans are building robots to replace human workers, who were never considered as men but machines. In the first video, robot replace the bride, this reminds us the status of women as house wife, old style. Cooking, cleaning,washing, a perfect robot for macho men. The elegance and the fragility of is far from this fake bride.
In the second video, we have a fascinating movement, reminds us why we stay in front of an aquarium, looking at the fish movement. Looking even at industrial robot is also hypnotic.It's an open design, a fantastic bestiary, directly conected to our imagination.

My favorite company for robots is Honda for many years. Following their adventure in robotics is like being connect with a powerfull vision of the future. In the same time I don't believe in humanoid form of robot. Controlling a robot with human mind could be also observe from the point of view of the robot. This could be a way for robot to examine the fonctions and the structure of the human brain. Like sports beginners robot is following the exercice. Imagine if the robot was teasing the man, could we understand.

The question about the locomotion is one of the main because it seems for many robots already developped the wheel is not the best. Moving like animals is more confortable on any surface. Also if you considere a super size cockroach could be faster than a sport car for example and could keep running in different environnements. Legs for robots can also become arms. Wheel was the fondation of the human civilization because we needed to move quickly to communicate. Speed communication today does not need to. Maywa Denki is a japanese company founded by Nobumichi Tosa whose mixing robots and music. As japanese way they work for products even if they have a real artistict vision of their work. It's seems just toys or funny and stupid installations but it's because their vision is light not heavy.

Electricity is probably the energy of this century. The problem is : " If we can or not use it naturaly through the solar panels regarding the carbon's pollution". The biggest revolution might be the electric car, no because of the energy itself but the noise. Electric car is suppose to be silent. Can you imagin highways without noise, city quiet as a peacefull landscape. Sometimes I'm listening at the city voice at night. Before posthuman, there will be a period of cooperation between human and robot. As the 80's for video games we have to say thank you to military developpements. If we considere the necessity of eyes for robots moving in human environnement, camera is the simplest way. Military robots are developing this vision but there's more interesting question " What's the future of making a movie ?" When you can be free of analogic technology. If you could have a digital camera directly on your eye, a drone recording in 3d space . On youtube today people are looking to others through mobile movies recorded, not fictions. Reality is becoming the new fiction, people are recording their life as a fiction. When you record images with the new technologies, no need to have a team, you're the selfshooter. There's also the question "recording for who", a public or the web itself. When I say we are the eyes of robots, I feel like the dog for blind person. We'll need more and more robots to work, to assist for us but will robots need human at last.

For few years I believed in soft cover for compters, home comptuters do not need hard cover. It only need to care of dust and liquid like "Scotchgard", soft cover could refresh it with out fan or liquid system. I'm so happy to see this concept car because it's hopening a new way. This is also going with e-paper like sony, HP or LG screens.

Yes Osaka is the best place for people who are looking for new robots.
A 20 minute production by playwright Oriza Hirata at Japan's Osaka University Hirata is also a visiting professor at the and was performed for the media ahead of a possible full-scale public run in the next year or so. Hirata and the rest of the project team wrote special software that lets the robots move and deliver the right lines.
In the play, the robot is complaining that it has been forced into boring and demeaning jobs and enters into a discussion with the humans about its role in their lives.

This event shows how human is trying to integrate robot in all ways of creations. Do robot have a feelings or imagination and can it be translate in human language. For me the best performance by a robot is when I see the perfect gesture repeated again and again like monk, I feel something spiritual in it, something beyond human condition.

Sometimes when I make research for robot's news , I'm wondering about the real purpose of their utility. Robot has a fonction, replace human for hard work, " robota" in the biginning. This robot is maybe one of the most scary creature. I love it because of the shape and the noise completely out of soft design. It's like a nightmare. The interesting fact is the creators did not try to make it similar as a dog, no head, no tail, no stupid nickname.

Astro boy

In 1951, Osamu Tezuka created Astro Boy. Few years ago I met Honda's chief engineer of robotic departement who explained me why they created Asimo at first. Mr Honda wanted a friendly robot like Astro Boy in the 70's. In a room there was the manga collection of Astro boy ( mighty Atom ). The engineers had to read it and copy the concept, all were car engineers and became robotic engineers because of the project. I believe many people like me became robot's fans because of it.
The funny thing is when I asked the chief engineer if Asimo was an homage to Asimov, he asked me "Who is Asimov ?"

A very important part of robotic for me is concerning the medical part, surgery especially. When I was making some research for Electrumcorpus, I had interview with differents surgeons. One was very interesting for me because I was developping tools for the robot he was working with on heart operations. Surgery is a broad category of invasive medical treatment that involves cutting of a body. Before the robot, surgeons used to say " Great surgeon, great scare", now a small hole is enough, thank's to the robot and it's non ego. Human created the machine, the machine is repairing the human. Maybe it is a moment of real conversation between two types of machines in a way. The more we accept the fact of depending on robots, the more flesh will just be consider as a past structure. I believe we are very close to the step, not only repairing but definitively replacing human physical fonctions to achieve humanoid vision.

From the "L'Ève future" by Villiers de L'Isle Adam, robot is a projection of man's fantaisy, control the partner and become the master of a sexual slave. No feeling, no dialogue only childish desire, animated toys for adults. Robot as an object of desire is also the connection between flesh and machine, a new step to the posthuman like the vision of Jean michel Truong . If the artificial intelligence was the master and started to make human depending, love and sex not for the future of humanity but the begining of the robotic chaos. Thinking about social laws controling the relation between human and robot make me think a about loosing the control on a natural situation. The web is a strange time machine, can be considered like a universal memory. Forgotten is a human power in a way when I see this kind of strange crossover. Words can give you a feeling even a nostalgic image of a forgotten past but a web can be like a pornographic image, raw with no seduction just the fact with out mystery. Sometimes it's better to leave the past in the pandora's box. A simple keyword can distroy a nice memory like when your brain is showing you a fake image of an old TV serie, just a feeeling of a perfect past.

When I make research on robots, I mostely I found military development. It's reminds me the three Laws of Robotics:

A robot may not injure a human being or, through inaction, allow a human being to come to harm.
A robot must obey orders given to it by human beings, except where such orders would conflict with the First Law.
A robot must protect its own existence as long as such protection does not conflict with the First or Second Law.

It's good to know and remember for a better future.

The photography changed the last ten years with the digital cameras. The media moved from paper to screen but the medium is still the same . From the past to the near future light is fixing on a sensitive plate. Nothing changed exept one thing, photography exist through the video technology and became a part of the video camera.
If you have choice between an image and the mouvement. The answer is youtube and other website dedicated to short movies. A painting or a photography need to have a culture to look at, the mouvement is enough for most of the people because TV is the reference. If you look at the 19th century photographies creation was there. Today photography can only be saved by the graphic computering . The next generation will not have nostalgia for the photography. Video will become a part of instant memory, already some young people can not remember what they did 3 days before with out recording.

Robot for which purpose

If robots are becoming a part of our life in a very near future. What will be the purpose, labor, entertainer and beyond mecanic shape is there a robotic life form ?
Is humanoide shape a good solution or just a very short vision of the real posthuman world.
I do not believe in this solution, the global robotisation is on the way. No more labor strike, no more pain for old worker's body. Robots will develop their own shape, far from human shape.
